There were twelve authors of the book of Genesis; we are not told who wrote the first chapter, but Jesus was the only one present!!! The books were translated and compiled into a single book by Moses.
How do we know who the authors of Genesis are?
(1) The phrase: "These are the generations of..." should be translated: "These are the records of..."
(2) The historical events in each section took place during the lifetime of the author named.
(3) The historical events in each section were events that the author would have had first hand knowledge of.
(4) Tying verses were used to keep track of the correct order of the
scrolls.
The book of Genesis is rightfully ascribed to Moses because he is the one who translated and added editorials to the records. We do not know how these scrolls arrived into Moses' possession. They could have been handed down through Joseph's descendants or somehow passed to the tribe of Levi after Joseph's death.
Moses was born 63 years after the death of Joseph and was a descendant of Joseph's brother Levi. Levi was four years older than Joseph, but we are not told how old he was when he died. Jacob was 87 years old when his first born son, Rueben {Joseph's oldest brother}, was born. We do not know how old Amram [Moses' father {Numbers 26:58-59}] was when Moses was born, but based on how old Jacob was when Rueben was born, it is entirely possible that Moses' father Amram and mother Jochebed could have known Joseph personally!!
{See the World Time Line of Biblical History for exact years."
Moses was schooled in all the education available to the princes of Egypt. {Acts 7:22f}
We do not know when Moses translated the scrolls. I'm inclined to
believe he carried out this task during the 40 years Israel wandered in
the wilderness.
Note that Genesis 1:1 does not say:"In the beginning..."; but
"In beginning..." The reason is because there is no such thing as "the"
beginning for Jesus! If Moses or another human was writing the
first chapter,
he {or we} would be inclined to write "In the beginning..."
